Growing Carrots
I'm not sure if I had beginners luck, but I had a bumper crop of carrots this year and while most of my brassicas are getting eaten to shreds, my carrots remained untouched.
THINGS I KNOW ABOUT GROWING CARROTS
You can definitely grow carrots in deep containers, in fact it might be easier as with compost you can insure there are no rocks in the way.Cover the whole crop for as long as you can, once the leaves hit the top of the fleece, I removed it and didn't have any problem with white fly.As with most root veg, plant seeds direct in the planter. I planted my seeds all at once, harvested the large ones, leaving the smaller ones to grow, getting a few harvests.
VARIETIES GROWN SUCCESSFULLY
2016 Update ~ I used to grow a mixed colourful seed, such as the rainbow mix from Pennard Plants, which are perfect for those with limited space. This year I wanted to know the variety, and had great success with the following:
Purple Sun
Lunar White
Chantenay
A passage from Tranquility
by Robert William Service
On milk and oaten meal I’d live,With carrot, kale and cheese; The greens that tiny gardens give,
The bounty of the bees.
Then war might rage, I would not know,
Or knowing would not care:
No echo of a world of woe
Would irk me there.
